The mantis shrimp has a clublike arm that can crack clamshells and move as fast as a .22 caliber bullet. When they fight each other, they use a shield-like tail segment called a telson to protect themselves from such powerful blows. UC Riverside researchers have discovered special structures on the telson’s surface and interior that help absorb and diffuse impact energy.
